Growth has to be sustainable to justify the extra cost it brings — more equipment, more inventory, more people. The businesses that expand successfully are the ones that budget for it properly before they start.
Work out where your economies of scale actually sit, and what limits them — are you constrained by a supplier’s ability to keep up with you, for instance? Both your fixed and variable costs are likely to rise, so forecast carefully, covering both the expansion itself and the ongoing cost of running the larger business afterwards.
Using existing cash reserves avoids outside interference but limits your pace and exposes the business to more risk. External financing — a bank loan, an investor, or a mix of sources — can fund a faster, better-resourced expansion, provided the numbers support the repayments.
Whichever path you’re leaning towards, it’s worth running a financial health check before you launch into it. We can help you build that pessimistic-to-optimistic forecast and work out what level of expansion your current cash flow can actually support.
